One of our earliest elementary-school memories was a visit to our kindergarten classroom by Smokey Bear. We got little magazines, drew pictures and got our pictures taken with the U.S. Forest Service icon. Most of all, we were taught that nature was a veritable tinderbox, ready to engulf the nearby state park in flames at a moment's notice.

OK, so our memory may be a little off there, but Smokey's point remains: don't burn down the forest. The late summer/fall wildfires outside Boulder, Colo? Human caused.
